It was well written and Mario Böhmer does an excellent job of walking us through setting up a protocol for the two devices to communicate together using the Android Accessory Development Kit (ADK). Although, it does not seem very long in terms of technical books, I think this is a must have on the subject.For Android: this book is not an in depth introduction to Android. Although this book does walk the reader through getting the eclipse environment set up, Mr. Böhmer merely touches on the subject of programming Android, as I think he should have. Each project covers the Android side of the communication very well, but do not expect to be an expert on Android after this book. I do not have a good recommendation for a good book on android. I think the Apres book "Android Recipes" is worth buying, but as a cook book, it is not an in depth cover of android. Although The O'Reilly book, "Programming Android" has some useful information, I feel that it could have been much more succinct.
For Arduino: in many ways this is a arduino cookbook. This book seems to cover everything that one would want to do from lighting LEDs and moving Servos, to listening to buttons, sensing temperature. It even has a create your own capacitive touch button using a sheet of aluminum foil. I would also recommend "Programming Arduino" by Simon Monk. That one is very short, but has a good reference to the Arduino Library. I would not recommend Mr. Monk's "Evil Genius" series unless you are introducing children to the subject. Those are very high level cookbooks with some fun projects, but you do not see any code. For that you would have to download.
For Hardware: I am using the Arduino Mega ADK. Recommend picking up a solder-less breadboard, some jumper cables, LEDS, some resisters (10kohm and 330ohm), some tack buttons and a USB cable.
For Software: I would recommend IntelliJ Idea instead of Eclipse. I use the free Community Edition.
